“Being a doctor, especially at the time of a birth, is a great responsibility but it is also a fantastic privilege to share in that moment of a family’s life.”

Doctorate of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School

Residency

Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

Special Medical Interests

In addition to obstetrics, my interests include minimally invasive surgical procedures, and treatment of urinary incontinence, menstrual difficulties, and infertility. Advanced medical technology can now be used to treat many common conditions very effectively with little or no recovery. Using the power of this technology to reduce suffering and improve a patient’s quality of life is very fulfilling to me.

Biography and Personal Interests

I understand the profound impact that human interactions can have on one’s life. It was a series of such interactions that led me to a career in ObGyn. As an undergraduate, I was drawn to a service-oriented career and spent my first two years as a mathematics education major. I then met a wonderful professor in a human anatomy and physiology class. This professor ignited my enthusiasm for the amazing nature of the human body. Even more importantly, I began to see how important it would be for a doctor to be a good teacher and that much of what drew me to a career in education could also be had in medicine.

In medical school, I was on the path to family practice, as this seemed to offer the best chance for continuity of care and long-term relationships with patients. Once again, a powerful interaction changed my course. In my third year of medical school I spent an eight-week rotation at Western OB/GYN. Here I found a warm, family atmosphere where the highest quality and state-of-the-art medicine was practiced. The doctors showed me that everything I loved about medicine, long-term continuity of care, the challenge of a wide array of medical problems, and the chance to develop my surgical expertise, was present in ObGyn. And of course, obstetrics is the greatest part of all medicine!

I remain active in education, both with my patients and in working with medical students that continue to rotate through Western. The cards and letters of thanks I receive from patients and their families are prized possessions and may, in some small way, continue to speak to the impact that individuals can have on other’s lives. Being a doctor, especially at the time of a birth, is a great responsibility but it also a fantastic privilege to share in that moment of a family’s life.

Raised in Colorado, I have always had a love for the outdoors. When not at Western, I can often be found outside in all seasons enjoying hiking, biking, camping, gardening, volleyball, and skating. I am an avid reader and still play “a little” piano for relaxation. My wife, Laura, is a local pediatrician and we are blessed with three wonderful children, Josh, Anna, and Lucy.
